Meet the Interim Principal

Ms. Shana Riehl - Interim Principal

Shana Riehl is the interim principal of Cumberland Elementary School. 

Shana began her career in education as an elementary teacher at Vargas Elementary School in 2002.  Since then, she has served as a new teacher induction mentor supporting teachers at all ten Sunnyvale schools, as an instructional coach at Columbia Middle School, and most recently as Assistant Principal at Fairwood Elementary School.  Along with this experience, Shana brings a background in effective instructional practice, strong listening and organizational skills, and sincere love of children, coupled with a deep commitment to supporting the full potential of each child.

Our new Superintendent, Dr. Gudiel Crosthwaite, will engage the Cumberland community during the course of the coming school year to select a permanent principal for Cumberland for the 2026-2027 school year.

Shana replaces Laurie Carlson.  Laurie has been an inspirational teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal in Sunnyvale for twenty-three years. We thank you for your service Laurie and  wish you all the best in your new endeavors!
